Hi everyone,
Some of you may have seen my posts back when I first got my computer. Several of you were very helpful in assisting me with getting set up. I come to you now with one more question: I have found that some sites do not like to work properly on my computer. I touched on this in one of my other posts, but at that time, I didn't make it one of my main concerns. Now I must, however, because one of the sites is Facebook. My volunteer duties at the Center require me to use Facebook very frequently, whether to spread the word about an event, do outreach, recruit other volunteers, post information important to people with disabilities, etc. Besides that, Facebook is my main way of staying in touch with all my friends. I use it for everything. I have to get it to work on my comp if possible. Here's the problem: Pages on the site take ages to load, and often there is a delayed response with navigation commands and in form fields. Usually, my session ends when I try to do something in a form field, and an error is created that forces me to restart IE, although I think I remember this happening on occasions when I wasn't in a form field as well. What are the possible reasons for this trouble? Could it be my operating system (Windows XP)? Does Fb have problems with JAWS 11?
Any help would be much appreciated. I must get this resolved.
Thanks,
Becky
Try switching over to Firefox. It's generally a better browser anyway and may stop your crashing problem:
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Jaws is horrid when it comes to this very issue with lag on some sites. Have you tried the mobile version of facebook, m.facebook.com? or Facebook Light? light.facebook.com
I too would recommend a switch to Firefox. Cheers
there isn't much you can do on those two sites. facebook main you can do everything on, and sometimes that is what someone needs... as to this problem, i'm using vista, jaws 10 and not having a problem...
Not sure if XP has Data Theft Provention or not (at least, I think that's what it's called,) , but in Vista, I was having the same problems, both with firefox and internet explorer. Once I disabled data theft provention, most of the problems stopped.
No XP doesn't have it, but she'll most likely have better luck with the mobile site as suggested. I also suggest if you haven't to update by using windows updates then see it IE doesn't smooth out. Also Java and Sylver light should be updated to the latest. I'm not a Facebook user so would need to use it for better help. Also if you do switch to firefox read the firfox board and set yours up as described, befcause if not then you'll probably have other issues as well. No issues however with XP and Jaws at all. Give us some more feedback after you have made changes and maybe you can get more answers.
Last I forgot to ask if you have inquired to Freedom Scientific about the issue? Maybe other Jaws users of Facebook have and they will have an answer as well.
I've been wanting to check out Firefox anyway, so I guess I'll play around with it today. It's already on my computer. Any suggestions as to commands I need to know that are different from IE? Also, what is Facebook Light? I've already done a Windows update, but I will update Java and Silverlight if I don't have the newest versions. Thanks everyone.

Okay, I can't seem to find the name of the latest update of Java. I have Java 6 Update 18 on my computer. As for Silverlight, I'm not sure which version I have. How would I find out?
Becky
Silver Light updates in the Windows update, so it's done. Java is up to about version 20 21, but go to www.java.com or google Java.
Also Java wants to load other programs as it installs so you don't need them unless you want only Java and Java updater. One thing it offers is open office, so when installing uncheck the box.
I keep thinking of things. Smile Okay last are you sure it the pop up blocker is on in IE Check. Open IE Alt T to tools arrow tell you here pop up blocker, right arrow and put it on if it isn't. Let me know your progress. I'll have more questions. I went to Facebook and it seems to work smoothly. I'm using Jaws 11.1430 and window 7, but the OS doesn't matter. I can't see it now, but I believe you said you are using Jaws 11 as well so update it to the latest. Go to Jaws then help, then check for updates. Not picking, but your Jaws must be licensed to update it. I'll help as best I can, so keep posting. I'm sure it can fix.
Back to the facebook mobile issue, you can now create an event, which you couldn't always do.
Does Java not update with Windows update as well? I went to the website, and the latest version seems to be something called Java4You. It didn't have a version number, though. And pop-up blocker is on.

So I started playing with Firefox this morning. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall it because something was wrong with the one that was already on my comp. The installation was successful, and I have indeed found that some sites work better, but one thing is wrong: apparently I need Apple Quicktime to view certain media in Firefox, so I downloaded it. The download appeared to finish, but I'm still being told that I don't have Apple Quicktime! This is the same thing that happened when I tried to install Flash 10, and it's infuriating!
Okay Java does not update with Windows update and it's at version 20. Try this page. Click on the free java link or download java free when you get there. If this link is hard for you I'll give you an easier one.

Okay now to check the Apple software look to see if it's in your programs. For that matter anything you download look to see if it's in your programs. If not you probably have a firewall, or virous program that is blocking these from completing. Do you know what kind you are using? Something else might be happening that is blocking Jaws from working as well, but you'd need sighted help to tell you what happens when you are trying to do things. From this point on keep posting, but if you are having other issues then I'd have to look at the computer almost to solve the problem. Keep posting maybe you'll hit the reason. Try updating. Also in the search box type in firefox on this sight and read the fix or setup for it.
